    streams in the peak

    has any body else noticed that streams and rivers in the peak district have such a rich brown colour at the moment? is there anybody out there that can explain this wierdness? i can only hypothesise.. the glossop boys must be fly tipping all their excess gravy!

    I think the brown colour would be peat in the water. Particularly after very wet weather loose peat tends to get washed into watercourses causing said brwon colour. Or at least thats what I'm thinking. Although I do like the gravy idea though

    Gives it a lovely flavour. Got down to the bottom of William Clough and had a bit of a wash and a drink from it a couple of weeks ago whren a couple of walkers came down and I got the classic "Wouldn't drink that if I were you" "Why's that then?" I asked to which he replied (answers on a postcard...)

    Might explain the name of Gravy Clough?

    Peat = compacted sphagnum moss

    Dry peat is very dusty, having no structure.

    Peat holds high volumes of water - can be up to 98% - but when it gets supersaturated the water is released as surface run-off, together with suspended tiny brown particles of sphagnum moss = brown colour

    Very little nutrient, so apart from sour acid taste, not hazardous to drink

    Streams fed from springs and filtered through the ground, so are clear. Streams fed from surface run-off have high levels of suspended particles

    Peaty water does contain higher levels of some metals - wouldn't pass drinking water tests. However I would drink it occasionally provided not contaminated near sheep for instance, but we're on spring water anyway!

    Being a very regular boozer of Darkest Peak waters, don't seem to have done me much harm.......
    or has it, maybe I'd be dead good runner if only I drank of the purest cr*p tap & of the most plasticky bottle... hmmmm...?

    Hey Up Grouse....will you be sampling the fair waters of Bamford tomorrow eve and maybe Sheldons finest sparkling offering on Thursday eve.....?

    When we lived in Upper Booth our water supply was straight off the hills with some rudimentary filtration/purification. Tasted far better than that 20x recycled stuff you get in the cities. After heavy rain if you ran a bath it had a definite brown tinge to it which is most certainly peat colouring.

    No Bamford this year, Marg has talked me into the Malham - Matlock fun run. Don't you fancy it? Thought it might appeal to you? I'll miss the Sheldon rodeo though...
