    first aid at races ???

what are the rules in a fell race regards first aid

last week i was asked to cover for first aid duties tonight for our club race as st johns are charging us £80 for two of there members to attend.
our secretary has me and another member to do it
we are both qualified first aiders.

im not sure what the rules are for fell but the summer league that we run in stipulates you have to have two first aiders if your club organisers a race.

okay £80 doesnt seem a lot but last year we had a incident and honestly i thought the way the two first aiders that we bought in dealed with it wasnt good enough.

    whats the rules
    anyone know.

See sections 12 and 13 of the Safety Requirements for Fell Races in the handbook or here.

    Daz,

Dont want to take the moral high ground here, but whats wrong with paying them £80? I give both St John & EMR more than that for Burbage - both worthy causes and both money well spent for peace of mind.

Heaven forbid if there was a serious accident it would take one hell of a blood sucking lawyer to prove you hadn't taken reasonable care.

    Regards, Andrew

    we cant afford it
our club is struggling at the minute
    next year maybe
theres not a problem with st johns attending , whats the difference anyway , ive been doing it for 15yrs at least, seen a bit of action , a few broken things, swallowed tongue, etc etc
forgot to say that my company pays the optional insurance for me that allows you to deal with joe public without the fear of getting sued, which i think all st johns members have
next year we will be okay

    tonight i had to
    car park duties
    first aid
run the race as well , okay dont ask i know but needs is needs
turned out that we had two other qualified aiders, one at the start/finish, one on the course and me when id ran

I've organised a few fell races, I've got a first aid kit that's never been opened!!

Major hospital just down the road, I rely on that

Re: first aid at races ???

surely the st johns first aiders can be no more qualified than me can they
okay they attend big events and stuff which is fair enough but last year we had two young lads who were sent and they didnt really do very well when one of the runners fell badly.
the club secretary just felt it wasnt good service so they asked me thats all

one of the bonuses that we had tonight was my 4x4 vehicle which allows us to access the course anywhere to collect a fallen runner if we should need .
