    Fell Racing overseas

Thought I'd post a bit about running overseas. From my previous visits to the US I'd found that they're either into long distances at altitude (think of the 100 milers that Mark Hartell has done over the years) or shorter uphill only races. However it seems there are other options and I spotted a 'fell' race in the US! (Must be some UK connection here.)

The Bretton Woods Fell Race 9.5 miles/3500 feet.

This race has actually just taken place so I've missed it - we were still in Australia. However the same organisers have a race in November which I've entered called the Roaring Falls Trail race. This climbs Mount Roberts in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and has a few miles of 'technical single track'! Will let you all know how it pans out. Am also hoping to do a trail race in the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina.

While in Australia I did a trail race (Numimbah to Pollys) that trashed my quads on the rough downhill. There were various distance options and I'm glad I went for the 18.7K. There were two climbs on the out and back course of around 1200 feet each and, despite being mostly in forest, it had the feel of a fast but technical fell race. (I was advised to watch out for snakes but didn't see any - the most vulnerable runner is usually the one in second place!)
