I know a RAID is an event with an element of adventure and I think I know that it comes from the French - but what exactly does it mean in the context of events - is it an acronym or what?

I think it stands for "Risky, and Incrediably Dangerous"
Raid literally means hike or trek (think Longmynd Hike, for example). It is a bona fide word, not an acronym. It is usually used for an organised long-distance off-road event; an informal hike (not a word we use very much nowadays in British English I think) is une randonnée.

Or Calderdale Hike.
Thanks, I get the gist. Now what does gist mean - no I'm only kidding.
Is a raid a speeded-up Yomp?
