    RAID - meaning of?

I know a RAID is an event with an element of adventure and I think I know that it comes from the French - but what exactly does it mean in the context of events - is it an acronym or what?

Raid literally means hike or trek (think Longmynd Hike, for example). It is a bona fide word, not an acronym. It is usually used for an organised long-distance off-road event; an informal hike (not a word we use very much nowadays in British English I think) is une randonnée.
