All details of the world masters are available on the website www.wmrcwales.org and the route is 9.7 km and 370 m ascent. Effectively a 10k trail race with the last third virtually all on hard packed fire road.
What were david's criteria for "fell races"? FRA calendar or BOFRA list?

How they call it mountain running is a joke in itself, looking at the course details. But then again mountain running is basically XC with a few more up and down bits. The Undulating XC Champs might be a more fitting name?
Wonder if many competitors will stop at the 'Water station' for a light refreshment along the arduous course? ;-)
Maybe these points are more important than the actual course?
Showcase Snowdonia National Park as a leading mountain running destination
Enhance relations with the international mountain running community
Increase the profile of mountain running in the UK
Attract and interact with both UK and international spectators.
Generate positive media coverage both domestically and internationally
Establish a clear and recognisable brand identity for the World Mountain Running Championships 2015
Is mountain running just there for athletes who aren't quite quick enough for XC or athletics? The format is so close to XC, with laps and simple terrain it strikes me as similar. If it was more like fell running I could see it having more credibility.
Steve Vernon and Emma Clayton may contest that. Mountain running isn't Fell but normally has a fair whack of climb in it. 370m in 9.7km = 38m climb per km, which works out comfortably as a B category race ('anything over 25m climb per km').
2014 WMRC masters details(uphill only)
MEN M35-50: 11.5km/+1180/-80m = 102m/km (won in 59:30)
WOMEN, M55+: 7.2km; +800/-40m = 111m/km (women's winner 44:40ish)
A brief look doesn't reveal any more course statistics, but looking at times (e.g. 2013 the men's race was won in 37min, the women's in 47) There seems to be a mix in course lengths and types.
Isn't it Orienteering that's for those not quite quick enough? But then again the Dane Carsten Jorgenson won the '97 European XC Champs before saying in his interview that it was just training for the Orienteering season.

Sounds perfect...for me;-)
