    Knee Specialist

Can anybody recommend a knee specialist. (Sheffield area if possible, but I'm not worried about travelling distance if I can get to the bottom of this problem).

Like a fool, I have been persistently running for several years with a bearable pain in my left knee. However, just of late it seems to be getting worse, taking longer to settle after a run, but it is now also affecting the way I run particularly on descents.
In the past I have seen my own GP who referred me for x-rays. Nothing showed up in the x-rays, and the suggestion was that it could be arthritis but I am not wholly convinced by this.
A physiotherapist told me it was a result of a tight ITB, which was affecting the position of my patella.

Any recommendations will be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

I got very bad pain on the outside of my left knee on a BG attempt on Saturday. GeoffB who is on here was with me and he was telling me he had the exact same symptons. Tight ITB was diagnosed and a very deep, and very painfull message had him sorted in no time.

Go for a chartered physio with connections to fell running. Denise Park if you're willing to travel to Clitheroe.

In my experience NHS physios do the bare minimum and have an aversion to touching anyone, so don't bother with them.

I'd advise against asking your GP to refer you to an orthopaedic surgeon or any kind of arthroscopy etc.

I've sent you a PM, Kevin. If nothing showed up on the x-rays you might be in the clear as far as meniscus problems go, as thinning leading up to tears will be visible from x-ray...but it depends upon the skill of the radiologist who viewed them. Patella Maltracking sounds fairly good from the information in your post. Be prepared to stop running for around 6mths or so if it calls for it, there are no short cuts, none at all.

If you are prepared to spend £200 then I recommend Dr Rob Gilbert at Wrightington hospital, Wigan. Go for a private consultation & you'll get in quickly. If you have an MRI on NHS first it will save you a few quid. He has worked with some of the best knee surgeons in the world & has many top athletes on his books. Good to go to a knee specialist as many GP's are not sports sympathetic & simply tell you to stop running! Good luck, hope you get sorted. Nick.
If it was easy everyone would do it.

    Hi Kevin,
Tim Budd at Global Therapies is a Chartered Physiotherapist and a fell runner (he's also mens captain of Glossopdale Harriers). I'm his other half, and we're based in Glossop so just over the hill - we're about 2mins from the bottom of the Snake Pass. Either send me a message on here, or maybe more reliable is to email us at [email protected].
    regards
    Lynne

Thanks for the reply. I'll bear your recommendation in mind. And you're spot on with your last comment. My GP has told me to rest. When I suggested that this is neither solving nor curing the problem he looked at me shocked because I had questioned his advice. Waste of time.
