I was told the same, I was told all they could do was fuse the joint with the toe sticking up in the air. Imthought, 'sod that' so I just keep running and swear lots when I knock it.
Yes! Had only 10 to 15 degree bend in left big toe (Hallux) and less than 10 degree bend in right Hallux!
Saw a specialist (Private) on a Thursday and was operated on (Both done!) on the following Monday!
The procedure is called a Cheillectomy (spelling?)
I was told this would give me another 3 to 5 years of running on the fells and that was back in June 2010!!!
It was very painful both before and after the procedure but with lots of Physio and perseverance I managed a sub 3 marathon within 10 months!
I'm still taking Ibuprofen regularly to reduce inflammation and to help stop the bone spurs which had to be removed from reforming and find that cod liver oil capsules also definitely help!
I saw the same surgeon with another related condition last year and he suggested I could have another Cheillectomy in the future when things deteriorate again. This was good news.
My advice is don't struggle on in pain like I did for months, get it sorted asap.
Hope this helps
Ady
I have had it for years. I have backed off training, keep fit by spinning. I dont find a problem with it during racing but it hammers sh1t out of my toenails.
You can manage it without surgery but have to accept doing things differently.
