Lovely graph Deejay - well found! Deforestation was more or less complete in Cumberland/Westmorland before 1645 when the lead smelting industry had resorted to importing timber from Ireland for charcoal making - Newlands was the name given to the 'new land' discovered once all the woods had been cleared. The revolution smashed the smelters (being Royal property) and possibly saved remnants of ancient forest.
    A circular route mostly downhill

Better make sure you're fit if fools like this want to re-introduce the wolf

They also create very rich habitats. But you're right - it couldn't help but have an impact on humans.

I I think you'll find that I haven't the majority of the cr*p which gets fostered upon the Lake District, comes from off comers with a romantic view of what the Lake District should be like, perhaps these folk should ask the guys who work the area (and I mean real farmers, not NT tenants who've had enough of their really stressful jobs in the city) what they think of bl**dy beavers.

Although saying that, maybe the wolves can eat 'em, and a few foxes as well while they're at it.

I know what I think of beavers, having been helping a migratory fishery conservation scheme plant 1200 trees, every tree, stake, guard, mulch mat being carried on shoulders up a remote 5 mile long valley. If sodding beavers start chewing them (in years to come) and felling them, I shall not be happy.
    Nor will our fish.
