    Training - help requied

    Hi all

I am new to the forum having joined the FRA over Christmas. I am new to fell running but have done a fair few half marathons and 10k's before although have been doing more road cycling of late as got a bit bored with road running on the flat.

Just wondered if there was anyone living near Poynton in Stockport that might be up for doing some training runs and if anyone could recommend some FRA events that would be a good intro to fell running.

I have registered for a couple of 15k trail runs over the next 2 months but was thinking of Shining Tor on 18th May followed by something at the Keswick Mountain Festival on weekend of 21/22 May.

Any suggestions for other events and training routes would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers
    Phil

If you fancy a run with Pennine FR just turn up at the Royal Hotel car-park in Hayfield at 7pm on a Thursday. We do an off-road run every week - about 90 minutes. You'll need a head-torch of course!

Thanks Geoff sounds good I'll get myself down when I'm feeling a bit more confident in my fitness levels for fell running. New Petzl NAO headtorch just turned up today so hopefully going to test it out this evening. Was struggling with a cheap Alpkit one when I was running up Blaze Hill in the mist last week.

Welcome mate. There is the odd race around the Littleborough area (one this Saturday too but sounds like it could be too soon?) - Wardle Skyline in a couple of months might be a good one for you

There's a few Pennine who are Stockport/Manchester based who use Lyme Park for hillier training runs so that might be your best place to start.
Keep an eye out for the Boar's Head race, which goes from Higher Poynton (run by a Pennine Grandee), as well as the myriad evening races across the Peak District starting in April!

The Pennine Thursday night run splits in to a few groups of varying speeds/distances and no-one is left behind so you shouldn't be too worried about fitness level - you'll probably get to meet the legendary Roger Ashby! They're a pretty decent bunch of folk as well (maybe that's because I seldom make the Thursday night runs?!) and a good pub at the end of it!

Thanks Nic - the Thursday night training sounds ideal if there are mixed ability groups and I will definitely go down, hopefully next week.

The Boar's Head Race sounds great will try to find date in the FRA fixtures list now.

    Cheers

There's usually three groups - one for speedy people (like ba-ba!), one for mortals and then I lead a fast walking group (I'm not allowed to run any more). Roger's in his 70s, and is quite amazing!

A pint in the Royal afterwards is, of course, compulsory.

Have you seen the Hayfield races website? Gives you all the local races.

    Look forward to meeting you.
