    Pins and needles - road

    Hi everyone,

Recently, every time when I run over 10k I seem to always get pins and needles in my left foot...so much so that I have to stop my run and walk.

Does anyone else suffer from this?

This is purely when I do road running.

    Equipment: Adidas Boost Adizero.

My initial thoughts was that my trainers were too tight. [I made them loose]

I have adjusted my style of lacing the trainers and I have also stopped wearing compression socks [they do seemed to be a bit too tight]

Any ideas? I had ditched a pair of new balance trainers because they were uncomfortable. I bought these Adidas ones because all the top athletes wear them road running.

Does any one else have this problem? Will it go away?!!

Do you think I should should fork out another 80 quid plus again and take a gamble on new trainers?

FYI I have been told I am a neutral runner when I saw a specialist.

Any advise or experience would be welcomed... it is a big deal. Especially when I want to do some Ultras this year.

I use them (adios boost) for speed work and races. They aren't the most supportive of shoes. In fact I think Adidas shoes in general are flimsier in their construction than a lot of other manufacturers. For doing high mileage I use Asics GT2000 (or similar) I find them more comfortable and supportive. The only big difference in performance is the heel to toe transition feels a bit more laboured, and they are a bit heavier. The Adidas feel more natural when pushing your limits, and for everything else the more cushioned supportive Asics shoes feel better.
Sometimes I get a sharp pain under my foot at the back of my toes, when running in the Adidas, but never have the problem when using the Asics.
Not sure what your problem is though, maybe a trapped / pinched nerve?

I get this sometimes but it seems to be purely for the reason of doing my laces too tight

I've been having a bout of this, and mentioned it to my physio whilst he was looking at my calf. The cause was a tight shin muscle triggering the nerve further down in my foot (left foot, top side at about 10 o'clock as you look down to your foot). Recently been suffering IT band issues in the same leg, and all the current exercises and stretching seems to be releaving the pins and needle sensation, so may be connected to something else? Not saying you're the same, but it may not be the shoes (I also use Adidas Boost for road work).

Looking at pictures of Adidas boost online I'd suggest they're a bit too lightweight for a bog-standard mileage shoe. The best runners will wear them in races/workouts but will often have a pair of 'heavy' (i.e. more cushioned) shoes for their day-to-day 'big' mileage. They may not be the cause but my two-penneth.
How do your feet fare when you go over 10km in other (e.g. off-road) shoes?

The only time I've experienced pins and needles is down to over-tightening, but you seem to have ruled this out.

Thank you all for your responses!

I think I will look to invest in some new trainers - especially as I plan to do some high mileage runs. My feet are quite broad, so it could be a simple case that they trainers aren't broken in properly OR they just don't suit my feet.

I will definitely do some stretches beforehand as well. Pins and needles suck! I guess I have to look on the positives...I can still run 10k's, things could be a lot worse.

I will keep you updated. The GT2000's look pretty solid btw!

Thank you all for your responses. I have purchased Asic Nimbus 18 [quite a cushioned trainer] - I am loving my running again! I have not had a dose on pins and needles since!
