Thread: recommendations for cold

    recommendations for cold

Tomorrow in lakes and current forecast is an effective windchill temperature at altitude of 13 degrees below. This is new to me, being more of a fine weather runner!

Of course I'm taking mandatory equipment, but what would most people expect to wear at the start of a race?

Clearly I don't want to overheat, and I don't want to freeze to death.

I'd go for hat, buff (around neck), gloves, base layer, t-shirt/running top/vest, jacket, maybe some kind of compression shorts under a pair of regular running shorts, socks

Some people would wear leggings but I'm not a fan

Overmitts, especially if it's damp, are great. If you can't get any double up on gloves. (I use little light gloves for warmth and dexterity and the mitts to keep them dry and maintain warmth).
A decent warm jacket (named fabric - goretex, eVent and the like) has been a worthwhile investment over the winter and it got some use again the other day (in the centre of Sheffield on the commute!).
Survival bag incase it all goes Pete Tonge!

as ever exercise sound mountain judgement and if you start to feel cold get off the hill as safely as possible.

Coldest race I've done (Marsden-Edale) I wore the following...

    Hat
    Buff covering my neck
Base layer, OMM primaloft smock, waterproof top.
    Ron hill leggings
    Ron hill gloves

Must admit did start to feel the cold after a few hours.
