The Cairngorm Loop has an annual group start on the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. It got cancelled this year due to the large amounts of snow. We were going to do it but had to pull out as I was working out in Taiwan until the day before the start so the cancellation was moot really. Many of the ITTs have a group start but obviously you can do them any time you like. More info and links at http://selfsupporteduk.net/

These days most of the ITT crowd are on 29er bikes, usually hardtails but some use rigid and some full suspension. Some use fat bikes and some use a 29er frame with 27.5+ wheels and tyres, the so-called semi fat option. A lot depends on the terrain going to be covered as to what they use.

The UK biggie, the Highland Trail 550, starts tomorrow - http://trackleaders.com/highland16 this thread http://bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk/ph...php?f=7&t=7738 is probably going to be the main discussion about it. If you are on Twitter then Greg May handles that side of things - @ht_550 the last couple of years only around a third of those starting actually finished.

Let's hope Richard wasn't carrying the tracker between Calf Crag and High Raise.
Potentially a lot of effort for no reward, if he was.
Even I don't know who The Grump is.

Perhaps a good reason to ensure that the contender always carries the tracker even if just to avoid those embarrassing "What's he doing in Cleator Moor?" moments.

Actually leg 3 is a good leg to be support on as on a clear day you can shortcut quite a bit of the route while still ensuring that the contender visits the summits. As support you only have to visit Steel Fell, Thunacar Knott, Rossett Pike, Esk Pike and Scafell Pike. Due to plentiful water en-route it's quite easy to be the only support as well.
