Broken Wrist - ok to run?

Came off my bike 2 days ago and have broken my wrist. It's in a full cast for up to 6 weeks.

I'm wondering whether I can run with it? That could just be gentle 2 mile road runs - and if so, have people worn a sling to do so?

I'm totally pissed off - am planning May BGR attempt and was about to ramp training up. Concerned that even once cast is off that it will remain weak for a while and be next to hopeless for the scambling sections on legs 3 and 4.

    That's a bugger!

I broke my collar bone in multiple places a few years back. I managed to run in the sling a few times, but was VERY conscious that a minor fall could set me back weeks. I would imagine a full cast would make things tricky balance wise too.

Most of the time I made do with a turbo trainer on a bike in the garage and long walks to try and maintain some semblance of fitness. The turbo trainer was dull as dishwater, but I listened to the radio and read to pass the time.

I broke my other wrist a few years ago and struggled to regain much strength in it for many months. Anyway - reckon it will be fine this time, just need to man up, plan on doing lots of brisk steep up hill walking reps and take it from there.
Played lads v dads footy v loads of kids today and that was pretty strenuous so all should be reet :-)

I'm in no way recommending this but.....When I broke my wrist, approx. 25 years ago, so my memory is hazy, I certainly was cycling at some stage and actually considered doing the KIMM in the Borders. I withdrew as I felt it wasn't the thing to do as a) They might not have allowed me to when I arrived at the 'sign-in' b) Potential for inconveiniencing MR services etc in the event of doing further damage etc. I guess I must have been doing a bit of running to even consider this but I'm not 100% sure.

I've done 2 10-mile runs in past couple of days and felt ok - biggest issue is my neck is sore from the weight of the sling. I'm going to make an adjustment to the sling to ease that. I'm seeing a specialist on Tuesday, if he advises me against running I may listen to him, but otherwise I'm considering running the races I've got coming up, just won't be planning to run very hard. As you say though, I will email the ROs to confirm that they don't have a problem with it. That said, I've seen that guy running races with a crutch, so not sure what I'm worried about :-)

I broke my radius and had surgery to plate it back together. No cast, and a sling for only a couple of weeks, but wasn't allowed to run for 3 months or so, as far as I recall, in case I fell, put my arm out to break my fall, and bent the plate. I would imagine the same would apply for a broken wrist. Difference with me was, with it being plated, I didn't experience the atrophy described above as I was doing physio within 24hrs of the surgery and had full use for most day-to-day tasks very quickly.

Once mainly healed I'd run. I qualified for wales at the Y3Ps with a broken wrist

As update - I actually ran around the Clwydians 3 days after the break and continued to do so throughout the 4 weeks whilst in cast - mostly whilst wearing sling. This included a Bob Graham reccie and also The Hebden race.
Ran pretty decent with little discomfort. At no point did I fall, which may have hurt a bit. The only major ache was around the back of the neck from the sling, but I went back to the hospital and they gave me a better one and at no point seemed bothered that I was running with it.
Cast off now - happy days
