Thread: Finding routes

  1. #11
I love my phone gps for finding my way around new places quickly and easily. We rely on technology to do so many thing, why cant i use it to guide me on a hill/mountain. I've used mine all over Europe and the uk with no issues. I know the battery could die or i break my phone but my watch also has a guide home function. Going to get some stick for this but i just find using a map slow and takes away from the running bit.

I'm based in Whitby North Yorkshire so I'm looking for new routes either in the north York moors, yorkshire dales, penine way or Lake District.
I'm not too concerned about distance and steeper the better.
Ive tried searching for routes but struggle to find hardly any. I'm maybe looking in the wrong places.

Any help would be greatly appeciated.

    Thanks in advance
If you can't find any running routes in the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District I'd give up now!

.......and not just one map, buy lots........so long as you learn how to read them and then work routes out for yourself!

Jonathan, a few bruising replies here, so we need a bit of context. How old are you, are you new to running, what do you count as steep etc. Without the context, your request does come over as bit unusual! As several others have pointed out, one of the joys of fell running and fell training is just finding stuff for yourself. Sit down with a lovely map, drink in the massive amounts of detail and formulate a route for yourself. Then go out there and see if the practice matches the imagination.
No amount of following other GPX routes will ever give that much satisfaction.

No problem - I have a way with words (or lack of them) apparently !

    Have fun
I forgot the 'have fun' bit. I'm not sure if the implicit fun element of my 'explore!' came across.

These have been an invaluable source for exploration for me with the information on route choice and other notable elements being particularly useful.
I also recommend the Harvey's maps in general both for readability and ruggedness but mainly as their content is targeted specifically at mountain goers and therefore of far greater relevance for fell runners.

Create a Strava account and have a search for activities on there. I have got loads of route ideas doing that.
