Ah, ok; can't see the point of that when it comes to mountain areas.

Graham Lake - Otley AC
Sort of makes sense when you take in to account that Strava was originally road cycling based so segments would be on the A123 or whatever. The person creating the segment still has the option to name it though.

Without me you'd be one place nearer the back
Or not to use strava! Do we really want a competition for the fastest ascent of peak X from some arbitrary point Y.
Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run
Gone off topic as there is a Strava thread, but somehow I have it in my head that they have got rid of auto-segments. Is that true?
so define fell racing, again?Do we really want a competition for the fastest ascent of peak X from some arbitrary point Y.
....it's all downhill from here.
If someone wants to cheat for membership they can. You and a mate can sit at home and submit you are doing an attempt and after attempt date send in a list of times that you both agree on and that you verified each others summits. You could have never been to the Lake District in your life.
Fair point, but do you really want a competition for the fastest BGR leg1 without this being part of a complete BGR attempt.
It just seem to demean the BGR ethos by effectively racing over parts of the route which strava seems to encourage.
Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run
Of course, maybe it's just me (don't all shout at once) but effectively turning everything into a race seems wrong.
ok, I'll shut up now...

I actually like strava segements, rather than just plodding along at my usual pace when I come to a segment I try to push my self for that segment. That is actual better training. Granted one should not need a gpx device to improve one's training, but it helps me.
