I keep looking at Stud Marks and Bill didn't seem to make any reference to facebook or the internet: so how did fell running survive for its first century?

Graham could I suggest that maybe genuine old fashioned camaraderie could have had a bearing on the early survival of Fellrunning.

Well even 3 years after the FRA was formed there were only 300 members so everybody probably knew everybody else and since 234 runners started the PPP race that year (1973) everyone could see with their own eyes what kit people favoured without needing to go on facebook to ask "what should I wear?"

What riles me about the Facebook page, and other Facebook pages in general, is people asking obvious questions when they'd be much quicker looking for themselves, but they just can't be bothered.

E.g. On the Dragons Back page, there's an advert about the new film, and people commenting "when's the next race?" When a quick look on the home page of the DB website gives you the answer...

Bill Smith has this reputation as someone who eschewed modern technology, but he was happy to make use of the printing press. Imagine if he had needed to rely on scribes in some monastery to produce 1800 copies of Studmarks!
In his lifetime he suffered from unreality, as do so many Englishmen.
