I did Carneddau once in 1989; probably not the first year it was run, but it wouldn't have been going for many years before that. I agree that it was one of the toughest AM races on the Calendar, and deserves to be resurrected. Were there problems with the venue used for race HQ (pub closing, or something like that)?
In his lifetime he suffered from unreality, as do so many Englishmen.

Yes maybe that was something to do with it. I can't remember who put it on, was it Eryri? Seem to remember a nice down and up near the end as well as the steep climb up Llewelylln.

I think the pen race started in 1975. I have seen a set of results dated 1977 as being the 3rd pen race . It was originally organised by a local mountaineering club who may have had a unofficial race in 1974. It is now organised by Eryri member Chris Near.

Do you have any more information about the origins of the race? Who started it? (Eryri harriers didn't exist in 1975). When did it first appear in the FRA Calendar?
No sorry. Just word of mouth that it was the oldest and the fact that on the 40th anniversary we all received a commemorative mug. I can't check the date on it unfortunately as I'm having the kitchen done and everything is packed away.

It a really popular race that attracts runners from all over the place and a lot who don't normally go fell running.
