    Barefoot shoes

I bought some heavily reduced Vivobarefoot trail shoes a couple of years ago and absolutely love running in them.

However, if they are as simple and stripped down as they seem to be surely I can get by in a cheap pair of 'plimsolls' instead of shelling out £80-90 on another pair?! Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

These would work. Thin bit off rubber to stop you cutting your feet. Simple!

Happy with my Vivo Primus Trail SG (soft ground)- they have great grip.

To be honest I was thinking of something like this...

The Vivo shoes I had were end of line trail freaks which I loved, however it seems a bit weird spending up to £100 on a pair of shoes that are supposedly virtually barefoot?

Altras are zero drop and easily as wide as the Vivo's - but have more cushioning. Their MT's also have decent grip. The only overt problem with wide shoes that I have found is that they tilt sideways more on surfaces angled to the side - so if you have "weak" ankles this may be a problem. It is said that the cushioning in the Altra's means that you do not need to build up wearing them quite so slowly.
