    Modern era greats

There were one or two topics on a couple of Facebook pages talking about Colin Donnelly and his Welsh 3000 record. I mentioned that in my opinion he was the 4th "great" and should be remembered as much as Joss Naylor, Kenny Stuart, Billy Bland.

But who of the era 2000-present could be thought of in the same way?

    Ian Holmes quite probably?
What about Simon Booth? Didn't he win Borrowdale 11 times?
Simon Bailey? an extraordinary amount of championship wins.
    Rob Jebb?

Seems to me that it's easier to pick contenders from the long challenges...
    Jasmin Paris
    Nicky Spinks
    Steve Birkenshaw
    Jim Mann

Will any of the above be rembered in such reverence as the past greats? Is there anyone else I've missed?

What about the current crop of runners? Carl Bell could possibly be of that standard if he keeps knocking out those performances in the Lakeland Classics... i watched him run up Pillar in the Wasdale race last year on a scorching day, and it was unlike anything i'd seen before.

    Good post.

Id say Ian Holmes is the standout great of our time, for my money.

And carol Morgan, Nicky Spinks and Jasmin Paris.

I also agree about Colin Donnelly. He pitched up at addingham gala two years ago and was brilliant - both his running and as a person to chat to after the race.

Think this has to be limited to human beings.

John Wild would probably figure in my top 4, pushing poor Colin down to 5th. He still holds the record at Burnsall and set the 3 peaks record for the course used at the time. 1 second off the current Ben Nevis record. A true great albeit without the longevity of many modern fellrunners.

I agree Simon Bailey. He's quietly ticking off more English champs than other runners who people talk of as "greats".

How many champs in how many categories has Wendy Dodds won?
    No longer "resting"

In British Champs, just the one. Lots in the English Champs though.

Including all categories, in the British Champs:
    8 Rob Hope (2007-2017, 4 open + 4 v40)
    7 Ian Holmes (1996-2016, 4 open + 2 v40 + 1 v50)
    6 Nicola Davies (1995-2012, 4 v40 + 2 v50)
    6 Colin Donnelly (1987-2004, 3 open + 3 v40)
    5 Angela Mudge (1997-2008, 5 open)
    5 Lou Roberts (2002-2017, 3 open + 2 v40)

In the English Champs, where there are more categories:
    17 Wendy Dodds (2000-2016, 1 v40 + 4 v50 + 8 v55 + 3 v60 + 1 v65) - would be equivalent to 8 without 5 year categories
    14 Sally Newman (2000-2015, 2 open + 7 v40 + 3 v45 + 2 v50) - equivalent to 11
    14 Dave Neill (1996-2013, 8 v40 + 1 v45 + 2 v50 + 3 v55) - equivalent to 10
    13 Ian Holmes (1996-2016, 5 open + 4 v40 + 3 v45 + 1 v50) - equivalent to 10
    12 Mark Roberts (1997-2014, 1 open + 2 v40 + 6 v45 + 3 v50) - equivalent to 6
    8 Simon Bailey (2004-2016, 8 open) - equivalent to 8

I've just tallied that from a quick check of past champions, so is not 100% guaranteed to be correct, but I think it is!

    So...
Rob Hope has won more British gold medals than anyone
Angela Mudge has won more British open golds than anyone
