    Waterproof Smartphones?

    Morning,

I have had a river/smartphone interaction which is likely to have killed my phone. The waterproof casing failed around the stupid vanity window (Lifeproof FRE for iPhone SE). I also forgot it was in my pocket but it’s mainly not my fault

Boy, these things get hot when water is added!

What’s the current state of play with smartphones? Needs to be no lower spec than an iPhone SE, it gets used all the time as a training tool including (the horror) navigation* both on foot and by bike. But also has movies/tv/music/maps downloaded in bulk so needs a decent amount of memory (128gb was good).

In an ideal world it’d be waterproof

*local low level stuff, don’t worry, you’ll not see wondering around in the mists on Beinn a Chaorainn with a dead smartphone and no map and compass.

There's a smart-phone available, with a CAT (Caterpillar) heavy duty casing and supposedly 'bombproof' spec, i think i saw it on the Carphone Warehouse website. Not sure the manufacturer of the phone itself, or if it is up to your spec, but it might be worth a look.

I did this last time. Thing is, I now spend a lot of time near/on/in water so ideally would want something capable of being submerged without a case, which I’d then stick in a case/bag which is also waterproof. There’s a lot of opportunities for the case to be damaged just enough to allow water ingress that I’d not want to rely on it alone.

In defence of the Lifeproof case, it did survive an unplanned “swim” in the Tay last February.

The XZ is IP68 rated and available, also in the ball park for pricing. But Android which I’m not keen on.
