Maybe i've been lucky, but in all honesty i've never seen any evidence of the 'supposed' blazer brigade mentality in any of the cross country leagues that i've ever participated in (M/cr and Distict, Red Rose, SEL, Mid Lancs)

I've just seen loads of hard working volunteers and officials (many of whom have been very successful runners themselves) giving up their Saturdays in all sorts of horrible weather to mark out courses and officiate.

Similarly from my experiences non affiliated runners, have and still do get a run if they turn up at any of these leagues.

I have seen several incidents when non-Club runners have competed in league races and, to avoid paying any entry costs, they have tried to declare themselves as affiliated Club members. This causes significant problems to team results.

Other problems occur when non-Club runners participate but do not wear any numbers (and again avoid paying any entry costs). This again creates difficulties with the results.

Non-affliated athletes who want to compete in cross country competitions should always ask the event organiser how to enter and pay the appropiate costs.

Nope - it would be highly unusual for world-class cross country athletes selected to run for Great Britain not to be members of a club.

If you are good enough then whether you are a member of a club or not is irrelevant and wouldn't affect selection. The facts are simply that virtually every half decent XC runner in the country is in a club.

And I'm sure that you can enter area and national XC's as an individual/unattached. You certainly used to be able to.

Individual entries from unaffiliated athletes have not been accepted or encouraged for area or national championships to the best of my knowledge.

    Current ECCA Rules state:-

    4. It is mandatory that clubs must have entered their Senior Men/Women's teams or individuals in their Territorial Championships, during the current season to qualify to enter.

    7. Individual athletes from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland may enter but Senior Men and Women must have entered their National Championships

    8. The English Champions shall be allowed to defend their titles as an individual entrant.
Clause 4 has caused some controversy in the past.

I suspect that the new membership scheme will be used by the ECCA and area associations to discourage non-club members from entering these championships in the future. This has already been in place for the Northerns since they introduced their membership scheme.

The fact is that the only means of entry to the regional and national championships is via an entry form sent to affiliated Clubs.

(iv) Within one month of the race being staged, submit any monies raised from the AUEF, to the relevant permitting Authority
I have consistently refused to collect any AUEF in cross country races that I have organised since this absurd rule was introduced.

However if an athlete was a member of a specific discipline club (say Tri or Fellrunning Club) then if that club was unaffiliated for that discipline they might be shown as unnattached - for example one of the leading fellrunners on the Island was running in XC races & routinely finishing in the top 3 (& winning a fair few of them as well) but because he was a member of a specialist fellrunning club he was shown as unnattached (& the same for the rest of us as well). However I understand that situation has now been sorted.
