We (Pennine FR that is) have a winter handicap race that we do each year starting & finishing from the end of Shepley St. It might be a bit long for you initially (you did post in 'Long Distance Challenges', though!), but you could use it as a basis.
These are the checkpoints we visit:-
1. SK 080949 Very small cairn on James’ Thorn.
2. SK 082947 Stream junction in Ashton Clough – east side.
3. SK 085942 Stream junction in White Clough – north side.
4. SK 093941 Waterfall at top of Crooked Clough – east side.
5. SK 087947 Spring below Lower Shelf Stones.
6. SK 075956 Stream in Yellow Slacks – north side.
7. SK 066967 Inside ruin on top of Glossop Low.
8. SK 063976 Stile at Torside above Reaps Farm – south side.
9. SK 068972 On path south of small wood and brook.
10. SK 055951 Stile near bottom of Lightside – north side.
This works out at about 9 or 10 miles and 1000m of climbing. It's a cracking route!
Andy Trigg went round it last year in 1:36 (about 12 minutes faster than me), but you should be happy with anything around 2:30 I'd have thought.
Cheers Geoffb, i could run and walk parts of it, its just gettin used to some routes !

I am living in the USA at moment but still have a house in Old Glossop at the top of hope street in one of the new houses. I used to love its location for running. I could be out on the moors within 5 mins if I wanted to be and I very often was.
Glossopdalers are your best bet as has been said. Tues and Thurs Leisure centre. Fellow fell runner also lives on water street. Pennine lads are often out there too
Depends on your level of running but lots and lots of routes available from easy to very very hard.
If I had 30 mins to spare then there is a little run around shire hill and mossy lea. If you have more time then the shelf moor race route is a very good test of fitness. James Thorn is to me a real sod of a climb - always glad to get to the top there.
Anyway -enjoy your in the real thick of classic country there mate
