Thanks Steve. A pleasure to be amongst some of those articles with my own. I've had an overwhelming response to mine, something I didn't expect...even had people asking for tips on managing the condition etc, really amazed, but then again, I suppose that's why I wrote it!

Indeed, it is rather gratifying to be picked out for praise by such an accomplished author as Steve Chilton. Thanks, Steve.
In his lifetime he suffered from unreality, as do so many Englishmen.

It was. Fortunately I enter via another door so my passage wasn't blocked.

Big relief then - could have been painful

Interesting to have two articles in this issue on the history of races that are 40+ years old: Wrekin and Snowdon. One connection between the two races is that both were won first time by Dave Francis of Westbury Harriers (Bristol); not a well-known name in fell-running, but he must have been a formidable athlete. Elsewhere on this forum, his name appears as the winner of the Machen race in 1977, the oldest race in South Wales that we have been able to find any record of. Searching round the internet, I haven't been able to find out much about him, but he came second in the Barnsley Marathon in 1978, which was a time when marathons were few and far between, and Barnsley was one of the most prestigious.

I ran the Wrekin race six times when it used to be held on a Saturday afternoon; easy to travel to by public transport. My first Wrekin race was in the same year that a bloke from RAF Cosford turned up for his first try at a fell race . . .

The Snowdon article was one of two in this issue by Neil Shuttleworth, a man who seems to be very much in the Bill Smith tradition: an accomplished athlete himself, and also a great writer on the history and characters of the sport.

Interestingly the first time I did the Wrekin race a guy from Cosford turned up, Ross Campbell, he was a mile ahead and apparently got sent the wrong way by a Marshall and finished 2nd. He'd also won the Stretton Skyline the previous September by a mile, the first time I did that race as well.

Not seen his name around in the last year or so though...

He won the Darwen Gala race local to me a couple of years ago too, he was miles and miles ahead of everyone. I think he's travelling around the world now (pretty sure I follow him on Instagram).
