There's been perpetual blizzard conditions since about 10pm yesterday roaring over the fells and the house roof and it's not abated yet. Most of the windows have been 'rendered' with snow and ice. The drifts are particularly deep and the standard, single bladed snow plough couldn't hack it this morning so had to be replaced by one of the double-bladed type often seen in the front of iconic wild west trains. This eventually allowed the plough to punch through the drift in the lane behind the house (340 metre Above SL)and farmers from down the dale have a better chance of tractoring feed to their stock. It won't be clear for long though!

I saw on facebook this morning that all roads out of Buxton are closed. Similar conditions here to what MD described. It's hard to tell when it's actually snowing as it's just 40mph sidewards flurries.

North Worcestershire and into Birmingham seems to be a bit clearer today but more forecast for later. I had still been commuting by bike (albeit the MTB this week) until this morning. Cold, snow and ice are one thing but coupled with high winds, not a great combination on a bike. Wimped out and drove to work this morning.

Should all wagons on the M62 be forced to carry snow chains between Nov and April?
8hr of delays due to various incidents.
This happens abroad with heavy fines for those who don't.

The MR land rovers on local news had chains on every wheel.

If we were all encouraged to fit winter tyres between November and April that would make a huge difference. The number of people who buy a 4X4 and think they're sorted for winter not realising that a 2X4 with winter tyres is a much more effective combination. If you've no grip with your tyres it doesn't matter if you've 4X4, 6X6, 8X8, etc.

Àgree. I have a set with specific winter tyres on my motor. And a set of snow socks in the boot.

1 hour to get home 5 miles from Coventry rail station. Included 30 mins to go three junctions around the ring road (although that is partly to do with the absolute abortion that has been made with the new traffic scheme around that junction).

How can we not cope with a bit of cold and snow.

Absolutely. There was a guy in a Kia Sportage stuck outside our house this morning - couldn't go backwards or forwards. And this was after the milkman had successfully delivered three bottles of frozen white stuff to the door step at about 5am. Milk floats are clearly the answer.

I've got winter tyres and they seem to make a big difference.

Some moaning on social media about not coping with the snow - why have we not got snow ploughs and so on - if we had them they would have been unused for decades, except on the higher roads/passes. Brilliant blog from Montreal on how they cope with snow there - warnings the road was going to be cleared, starting with signs asking for cars to be moved, then a van going up and down the road announcing the same, then tow away the cars not moved, de-icing machine, collecting trucks, repeat, repeat again, then a gritter - then the same for the other side of the road - so huge investment and infra-structure - but they do get 2 metres of snow a year - each snowfall costs about $1,000,000 to sort out.
