I don't know why they've got my mailing address but this site has some very interesting events in the aforementioned places and you know what I might just take a trip down and do some of them. Have a look Smoovasbird: http://www.trionium.com/

Couldn't agree more (about hill training, not northerners!). Until recently I lived in York - flat as a pancake for miles around - but went to the Lakes as often as possible (five or six times a year). I was a member of the rowing club so did all the training for that, probably only ran about 10 miles a week, but found that I could get up and down the fells at a pace that would put me in the top half of the field in most fell races.
Do stuff that develops cv fitness, leg strength and grit and you'll be fine
I did my best training run of the year last weekend in the South Downs above Chichester. I know it hasn't got any rocky descents to chuck yourself down but it's got all the uphills you ever need for training. They aren't big but you do them several times like interval training.

Oh yes it has - if you know where to look. Around Bury/Bignor is best - deep rutted roocky tracks are great for training on.
How did you get on then Smoovasbird?

Hello
I am a Londoner and manage to find hills. I live in north London and there are plenty of trails with some hills. At lunchtime I will do a 7.2 mile run with 615ft of up, which isn't bad (depends how you look at it). The Chilterns are hilly, wooded and steep in places and I would agree with those who suggest the North Downs are a good hilly area. I am doing the Box Hill Race (7.5m/1700ft) on the 19th Jan. Last year I did the Isle of Wight Fell Series which was superb fun and hard!
I rely upon my luck!
