Not cheap, but buffalo mitts are the biznis. You will not get cold hands wearing them. Only problem is it's not easy to use map and compass with them, but I found it easy to take them off and on (off and onnable) when necessary. I have used them for the Derwent Watershed and after a while, my hands get too hot and I have to take them off every now and again.

Sorry, forgot to say that they are not waterproof, but they are designed to keep warm even when wet, like the other buffalo gear.

are you sure that your hands aren't cold because you are only wearing shorts and vest. Up here it was very cold today, glad the TOP was yesterday!

You could go for some neoprene wetsuit gloves - I wear mine running and biking in the worst conditions and they do keep you warm - but not dry for obviousl reasons. Mine were about £10 - £15 and you can get them from any decent watersports shop.

Anyone know where the best place is to get some waterproof mittens? I have seen these on ebay but I am not sure if they are any good.

I have the same problem. What I found is that most "warm" gloves or mitts are too warm when I'm running, so my hands sweat a lot. Also, a lot of gloves are snug enough to reduce circulation.
The best solution I have found are Powerstretch liner gloves which are light, wick sweat, and don't compress fingers. Most of the outdoor product companies make these - I use Manzella's mostly because of availability here. Then if it is cold enough or wet enough I used thin wind-blocking mitts over these. Mine are polyester microfiber on the back and some kind of wicking material on the palm side, so no moisture build up from sweat. Nothing as heavy as fleece cuz my hands sweat too much then.

    Good luck.

Got some Gore-Tex shell mitts for rough weather. Think they're made by Extremities.

If wearing mittens, make sure you get your mum to sew a bit of thread through the sleeves of your waterproof & attach the ends to your mitts so that you don't lose them .
I've just decided I don't trust you anymore.

Decathlon do some reasonable windproof gloves, which I found ok at Edale this year.
