    Sheffield

Might be living here in about 7 months time. At the moment I'm two minutes from open fell as I'm living in a semi rural location.

Without a car, is it possible to train for fell running in Sheffield?
    Does anyone know?

    Thanks

You could easily run out onto the fells from somewhere like Hunter's Bar on park trails in half an hour. Or catch a bus up to Fox House and you're away. Just running around Sheffield must be of some benefit as well as it's so hilly. Enjoy
Where I live it's really flat so I get my kicks from jumping tussocks down by the river!

Depends a lot on where in Sheffield, but from any of the west Sheffield areas (Crookes, Nether Edge, Hunters Bar etc) it's pretty easy to get out by bus. You can do long (15 milesish) runs over the moors around Stanage starting and finishing in Crookes, but you'll always have to use pretty similar routes out and back if you want to keep them 90% off road.

Forgot to add, I know the odd hilly circuit in west Sheffield on road that still feel like a fell course, I could give you more specifics if you end up in that area.

Depending where you live is the big factor.
North West Sheffield, Deepcar / Stocksbridge has a bus service to Sheffield centre, Penistone has a bus or train link to Sheffield centre.
Any of the above 3 areas will see you in open moorland in 3 to 5 miles in the north eastern Peak District. You could very likely meet IanDarkPeak or me around and about .
A bit nearer the center is Hillsborough, Loxley, Stannington, Crooks, Rivelin and Redmires where you are 2 or 5 miles from open moor and could very well meet contingents from Dark Peak Fell Runners .
Post again nearer the time of your move and I'm sure someone will give you a tour.

As said, head for the Western edges if you can. I used to live at Lodge Moor. 15 minutes by car into the city, but more importantly 5 minutes running into the steep sided Rivelin Valley and from there trails all the way into the Peak District. Regular evening training runs to Stanage Edge no problem.

P.S. Similar if you move to Stannington, Fullwood, Dore, Totley, Holmesfield.
The down side - these are the 'expensive' areas.

To answer the initial question - is it possible to train for fell running in Sheffield?
    Hell, Yes!!!!

Brill, looks like Sheffield's a good option!
Just found out there's a train to Edale.

Just hope I get a confirmed place at Sheffield Hallam!

Has PB say get in contact when you move up.

The Unis in Sheff have a strong running/Orieenteering club, a number of which also run for Dark Peak so plenty of running mates too.
