Very easy to follow. Stone slabs most of the way! Can be quite boggy either side of the slabs.
A direct route between Great Hill and Winter Hill.

    Re: Spitlers Edge Path

Walked this on good friday and went in up to my knees. From Great Hill you can stay on or near the paved path. After this the path follows the line of a broken wall, and it's along here just after a stile where I (and the dog) went in. Firmest ground was 15-20 yds to the west of the wall, Then just follow the wall (visibility permitting)
Of course I had to find this out the hard way and finish off the walk with an icy boot full.

Ay, I remember t'days when Spitlers were ALL bog. Used to be a proper training run i them days.

In fact, I used to organise a race from White Coppice to Great Hill, across Spitlers to Winter Hill, then back the same way (about 10 miles). It was held in Jan and called "The Great Winter Fell Race"

I discontinued it when they put the stone slabs down... no trail running in MY race!!

It was about 15 years ago. I ran it for four years (can't remember what the first and last years were). The results of the 1993 race (first 30) are below (I still had a copy!) and the other winners were Tim Kelly, Brent Brindle and John Hope .

It was a very low key affair because NWW (as they were then) placed a limit of 60 runners on us. It was usually done by runners from Chorley AC/Harriers, Horwich, Achille Ratti and Lostock and I always had problems with the numbers I had to turn away.

    Re: Spitlers Edge Path

Should be amusing to see how poorly my training run time compares to these at the weekend.

Hi chuffer. perhaps we should re incarnate this route for our club fell race instead of the Botany, healey nab Great Hill Healey Nab Botany idea.

Would be a great race to have back, I know a lot of the blokes at Lostock mention this race a lot.
