Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but another option that I have often mused over is the "Quadrathon"!!
If the obvious discipline for speedy human powered travel on land is running and that is the extended to cycling for the triathlon. Then why not take the obvious discipline of swimming for human powered travel in the water and extend that to kayaking for the "quadrathon"?
Looks good to me
The World Quadrathlon Federation defines that a quadrathlon consists of
1. swimming (2 miles / 3.2 kilometers)
2. kayaking (12.4 miles / 20 kilometers)
3. cycling (100 miles / 161 kilometers)
4. running (26.2 miles / 42 kilometers)
in the above order.
.....except the swimming bit
Is that all?
The archery/fell running diathlon is an interesting idea.
I am imagining the scenario of the last checkpoint of Black Combe (which quite a few struggled to see) and arrows flyng around at an almost invisible target at the cairn. I fear there may be some serious deaths. And the 'dibbers' might have to be located away from the target.
Jokes aside, safety would be a big issue if this type of event were to be viable. There would have to be a number of restrictions put in place, which would demand certain minimum precautions, such as visibility for several hundred feet and an extremely well marked course. There would have to be consideration paid to the issue of walkers and animals wandering on to the shooting range - perhaps the range would be taped off in some manner for the duration.
Possibly the easiest solution would be to conduct the event on a fairly low-level, short course, with one carefully monitored shooting range visited a number of times over the same number of laps, just like in the Biathlon. This would be a reasonably easy to marshal and relatively safe option.
