Fell running can be so simple and straightforward - just run to the top of the hill and back down again, or down the other side and up the next hill, etc...etc. Come on kids, let's keep it simple! That's the whole beauty of this sport.

I use Memory Map extensively and I've thought of getting a 305 (or indeed a 205 if they're still available) 'cos I recently heard you could indeed upload a Memory Map route to it to follow while you're out, but not many people seem to do it?

I've got a GPS60 which I use when I'm walking (which is great) but it's crap if you try and run with it.

Hi, sorry I missed your post until now.

Its a very crude form of navigation - you upload the track you've plotted into Memory Map (right click on the track and send to GPS), and all you get on the Forerunner (on the 301 at least, I don't know if the 305 is more sophisticated) is an arrow pointing to the next waypoint (with the distance to the waypoint). There's no map on the watch itself.

So it is very imprecise and basic, but I don't care. I often go off track by accident and have to unpick my steps, but its all part of the fun!

Of course, I could use a map and compass to do all of this, but when I need to just get out and run in a place I don't know, the 301 is much quicker. I can plot the route during dull moments in the office, and then head out as soon as I get back to the hotel. I was working in dull Chessington the other week, but within minutes of knocking off each day, I was heading across countryside to Epsom downs.

Great fun, but of course no substitute for proper nav skills.
