Footpods are never going to be as acurate as GPS.

They reckon that without calibration it's 95% acurate. When we go out for our Sunday jog, there's usually two people from our club that have Garmin 305/205's. They are usually quite close together in milage terms, my 50 is never that far off, perhaps half a mile out maximum, I've never calibrated the 50 but it would be interesting to see the comparison with GPS afterwards.

Another thing is that the footpod measures acceleration, not steps as a pedominter does. I think some people think that they're not sophisticated; personally I reckon they're alright - when my mates with the GPS's have run a good 14 miles, I've usually run 14.5!

    Good stuff.

Re: I want a garmin forerunner

I'm often travelling around the country staying in miserable Travel Taverns in places I've never been to before.

There is nothing better on a spring or summer evening than getting out the memory map, plotting a route across all of the footpaths I can find, download to my 301 and then head out for a mystery tour where I have no idea where I am.

I wouldn't be without it - its getting old now and has started switching off randomly (not good when you're in the middle of nowhere), but I think I know how to fix it.

Depends. I use Tracklogs which is another version of MemoryMap (I reckon better than MemoryMap). 1:50000 for the whole of GB is £150, which I think is good value. OS Explorer type 1:25000 maps are £25 each.

Apart from that you can use stuff like Sportracks software, which is free, which will import your runs from the garmin units and then display it on google maps.

I reckon the Garmins are worthwhile without mapping software anyway.

my garmin's definitely accurate, did a 10 mile road race a few weeks back and the 305 said I'd run 10.02 miles

You can download maps on an "as needed" basis - so if I know I'm going to be in a certain area you can get an area around a certain point from the memory maps site. It is a bit expensive, but just getting what you need is worth it.

I think people obsess a bit too much about the accuracy, reading forums and reviews etc. Its Garmin's fault, claiming 98% or whatever. Basically the distance is usually about right over a long distance, and that's good enough for me. It wouldn't be suitable if you need 400 m accurate the last metre!

I don't think i would go for the memory map stuff _ i did use it once, on a 30 day trial thing and there is no doubt it is really good, but the price just puts me off - good to hear there are cheaper/free alternatives

And I accidentally bought a skirt instead of a forerunner

Rich - does that mean you're using it (essentially) to navigate by?

I use Memory Map extensively and I've thought of getting a 305 (or indeed a 205 if they're still available) 'cos I recently heard you could indeed upload a Memory Map route to it to follow while you're out, but not many people seem to do it?

I've got a GPS60 which I use when I'm walking (which is great) but it's crap if you try and run with it.

    I've got a 305 and I didn't know that I could do this?

I use a Mac so not 100% sure if I can get the mapping software for it?
