Sorry to be dull but how do you work this out? Is it ascent in meters, over distance in meters times 100:

    (a/d)x100?

Is it meant to be this hard?

Don't forget that the distance of these race to the top events has to be doubled to compare them with the up/down races. Binnien would be 3.2/1750 if you came back down as well!

Trossachs - up and down Ben Vorlich from the Sloy dam - now THAT would be a steep 'un!!

Granted but if they actually started at the foot of the mountain it'd prob be something like 2miles and 1600ft as an up and down race..

Not sure what you are trying to work out there Trossachs. I just go off number of feet (sory to be old-fashioned) divided by total miles to get feet per mile overall.

FellMonster- Yep, it would be a good un if run like that.

Should be more races of this type IMHO. Probably a limited audience though, if Stolly's comment is anything to go by!

The New Dungeon Gill race is quoted in the calendar as 3m 2100ft. My calcultions are simply based on these figures where:
total ascent (in feet) / distance (in miles)
So this race would be 700 ft per mile ie 700%.

You must have some big hills up there that we don't know about, Trossachs?

Nearly forgot - Coniston Gullies (June 1st) 1mile/900ft.

Now THAT'S a proper steep race....

In the interest of scientific correctness quote the rate of ascent in ft/mile but not as a %ge, which should have no units.

I think thats what confused me Yanis, and I wondered if my formula is what we see on road signs, though I dont know this.

Interestingly using the ft/mile method and using figures from gps data on the six Lakes Classics, they rate from 281f/m (ennerdale) to 399 f/m (wasdale). The Arrochar Alps Hill Race comes in at a whopping 615 f/m, for a long race this is as steep as many short races!

Yep, there are some monster climbs/descents on that race Trossachs! The final descent is over 3000ft!

I think the percentages we see on road signs are based on 90 degrees (vertical, 1 in 0) being 100%, so 45 degrees would be 50%(?). To apply this to a fell race we'd need to calculate the average angle and all of them would be disappointingly shallow in reality I'm sure.

An uphill only race of 100m with 100m of ascent (equivalent to about 1 mile with 5200ft!!) would still only rate as 50%
