As I was descending through Deerbolts Woods today a brown mottled bird flew away ahead of me. When I got to where it had been there was a small black and white bird on the ground with blood on its back that was unable to fly anymore. Nature in the raw.

Went a bit further afield than normal for a walk with my wife today - Coxwold near Thirsk. Saw a flock of yellow hammers coming out of a hedge to feed on a field and a pair of Goldcrests looking very amorous. They are one of my favorite birds - so small and so busy!
    Sky larks as well Llani.

I think I have posted previously about the loud-mouthed blackbird who owns the birch tree in a neighbouring garden. Well, he is back, telling all the ladies within earshot that he's got the best tree in the vicinity.
In his lifetime he suffered from unreality, as do so many Englishmen.

Not exactly wildlife, but today, for the first time ever, 2 separate flocks of sheep in 2 separate fields started crowding around me - they obviously thought I was the farmer who normally feeds them. The second flock were quite persistent - I had to shoo them away.

Stepped out of my front door this morning to hear what I took to be a rabbit squealing in the meadow ahead, which I also presumed was down to a stoat fixing its breakfast. But no! There were two kestrels, one perched on the drystone wall, and the other being...erm...'intimate' with its 'friend'. Sadly, my appearance caused them to disperse, without event a moment for a postcoital cigarette!
