Saw a raptor yesterday, dark blue, smaller than a kestrel. Long thin and pointy wings over moorland near riddlesden - merlin maybe?
I always think of curlews as the first sign of spring. Not heard any yet but expecting to soon...
i saw a couple yesterday(curlews) near hawksworth(leeds)on the edge of ilkley moor, one was tucked against a wall near to a stone style, the other on a very underused path about a mile further on.
also saw a hare and a couple of deer.

A heron sat fish watching in Hope as I passed on the train this morning.
More remarkably yesterday, a heron in Nottingham (just a couple of miles from the centre) perched atop a roof. Grace & poise doesn't do it justice, a really remarkable bird; it even managed to fend off a couple of ravens swoop & squalling to try to bully it off its perch.
Great Grey Shrike
Saw a bird in the garden I hadn't seen before looked like a tree creeper but bigger, white/grey,black stripe over eye bigger than a tit....then saw a couple out on the Strines road (about a mile away) exactly the same. Theres always bird spotters out there and I asked what it was and he told me, apparently there are a few that nest near upper Midhope...will keep my eyes open for more.
having redwings visit out garden most days at the moment, lovely birds
