An alternative must be found. China's consumption of safety pins has increased tenfold in the last five years and their appetite is not showing any signs of abating.

If we're not careful, there'll be no safety pins for our children, and their children. And then what will the polar bears do?

The government needs to do more to promote a sustainable alternative. How about stitching numbers to vests using daisy chains?

I agree.....I like the idea of marker pen on yer hand......but then that's usually because Im caught short on the old saftey pins front......I have a big bag full of them but can never locate it when i actually need it!

It's funny - I was discussing this very topic with a friend after the Coniston race this year because I always thought that safety pins were essentially part of the monitoring system in that they keep the race number in place - where it can be seen by the marshals. Consequently I thought that it would be very strange that the FRA should encourage race organisers to stop providing this facility. However, I was informed that the "no pins" category was brought in unilaterally by the FRA calendar editor at the time because he hadn't managed to get hold of a supply of pins for his own race on a couple of occasions!
