Right well, ascending the mountain is the only thing to put me off fell running as im yet to try my luck at it.
What would you all say is the secret to the best ascending....
- Slow steddy pace.
- Technique
- Natural ability
- Stamina/fitness

going up is easy it is the coming down that is the problem
Hoping for a far more successful 2009
A very experienced fell runner from Tod once told me that you should look up to the crest of the hill. Suppose it keeps you focused. All it does for me is pig me off, when I see how far it is to the top. Oh, and I usual trip over cause I'm not looking where my feet are going!
Other fell runners have told me to save yourself as the race is won on the downhill?

Here is a website with some information about mountain running:

The book "Training for the Ascent and Marathon on Pikes Peak" contains training schedules and much more information.
The book by Harold Fricker "The Pikes Peak Marathon" is an interesting history of this event.

Hi Al
I go for short strides and head down, lean forward, Long strides sap your legs as you are lifting your weight all the time, it works for me, but like most people say get out and do it, practice, practice, practice.
Agree with all of that : short steps /stride mean better foot placement too.
Practice Hill Reps ...........LOTS!
Gradually gets easier but then you still push yourself so it still feels as hard but you are going faster.
Generally going nowhere fast.
