Definitely short quick steps and make sure you place your feet well, try doing some reps up and down a well known fell thinking carefully about it. Then just do lots of practice, also cycling is good for uphill muscles.

I'd say try runnin up 'ill if tha wants to ascend...run up th'ill faster if tha wants to best ascend.

Strong legs, strong lungs, but remember to keep a bit in the tank for the downhill.
