    Devils Staircase

I do the majority of my running up on winter hill and am still picking up on the names of different areas. The other day I heard somebody mention the "Devils Staircase/Devils Steps" (Can't remember which) but the few other people I have mentioned it to don't seem to know of it.

I know it's on the Rivington/Horwich side of Winter hill but that's all. Can anybody explain where this is?

    Cheers

    yes i can...

But not sure how's the best to explain, would a grid reference be best or a run to show you?

    Re: Devils Staircase

It's a short section of very steep road in the middle of nowhere in mid-Wales near to me.

    It has no stairs.

Possibly there are two places of this name - of which one is an imposter and that ain't our one !!

I'm pretty sure it's not the Devils Arse so that rules out Castleton thanks and if it's in Wales then that race is FAR too long for me!!!

Hopey, I got the grid reference and stuck it in the Ordnance survey website but it just shows the whole rivington/horwich side of winter hill. Does that Ref indicate a specific pinpoint on the map (If so I don't know how to work that out, sorry)

The only rutes I know coming down that way are the following.
    1. The route through the gardens to Rivi Barn
    2. The route down from the Pike used on the Rivi Piki Fell race through the field and past the school
    3. The route from the Pike Cottage, along the road and down round Wilderswood as taken on the Two Lads fell race.

These are the only routes I tend to use so any bearing from these would be great.

    Thanks for your help

You should come and have a run with us on a wednesday night!

OK if you are doing the pike race route you are coming down and you the hit the concrete road just after the farm, it's on your left hand side, there are a couple of stiles that you can go over which will both lead you there.

Thanks for that. I'd tried figuring it out from the map and got to around that area but didn't think it was in the trees. I'll go and check that out tomorrow after training. Is there a reason why it has such a scary name?

Which is the best way into the trees there? As you head down the road, there is a gate into the field, further on at the right hand bend there is a stile and 3/4 way down the hill (Before the road gate) there is a small wooden gate on the left. I looked at the Stile on the bend early this morning when I went passed that way and it's just so over grown with trees I wondered if there was actually a way through.

Thanks for the invite on Wednesday but I'm doing the Harrock Hill Race. Plus I'd only slow you down, I have a real snails pace.

    Re: Devils Staircase

Just over either of the two stiles on the left as you head down, if you take the second stile (near the gate) then keep left once you get into the woods.
