The money header is only to attract your attention Alf - these races are all about attracting new people to the sport, as there are different events for different abilities. They are also marked and marshalled so you won't get lost in your first fell race.

On another tack, why has the thread been moved away from the fell race section? The race is registered with the FRA (BM) and in the calendar and everything ???

Continental mountain races are fantastically organised and its good to see the approach undertaken in this country.
At the Smarna Gora race in Slovenia last year the course was well marked with good facilities at start and finish (even though it finshed at the top of the hill). Each competitor got a long sleeved-shirt, cycling style cap and a free meal voucher for at the finish - I got chicken breast in sauce with potato, sauerkraut and gravy and a large bottle of beer!! The race must have been well publicised too as there were plenty of spectators onroute. The organiser's attitude to making sure all runners had a good day out was really great.
Granted few hills in the UK have the permanent trails to support such activity but its certainly a shame that there arn't as many road and trail races organised with such passion.

I suspect one particular moderator does not want the "purity" of traditional fell running affected by the crass commercialisation of money prizes.

This individual has perhaps forgotten that the original Guides' Races in the Lake District included prize money.

The prizes for the first Guides' Race at the Grasmere Sports in 1868 were worth £3.00!

The winner was George Birkett in a time of 22 minutes.

£3.00 far too big a prize. The gripe i have is that the same money goes to the same few people all the time, both in road races and fell.Maybe a percentage of their winnings should go to their club for youngsters equipment etc. I have no problem with prize money, just that same people take it home. What about a third from last prize? Dirtiest runner at end...lol.

The average weekly wage for an agricultural labourer in that year was 12/- (that's 60p for the post-decimalisation members of the forum), so a not insignificant sum.

Lets not bother racing then. Just have a few nice group runs around the countryside.

    Re: Money at the Races

Just wanted to say that I ran in all of Trail Runners Lakeland races last year and thoroughly enjoyed them. They were well organised and had a good atmosphere at the start/finish (in different places for the Garburn race).

As for the prizes, there were plenty of spot prizes too, a friend who'd never done anything like that before and came well down the field won a pair of trail shoes. She was well chuffed.

    Re: Money at the Races

Some people seem to not want bigger and better races in the UK. The races organised by Trail Runner are excellent examples of trail races and all credit should be given to the organisers for putting these races on. All races have a prize structure and even better if some race organisers are offering large cash prizes. The races they organise seem to give a lot of prizes away to many different cat of runners.

I know I am down to run at all four of the races and am looking forward to them very much.
