Cumbrian Traverse

dismally failed to spot anywhere to park in Broughton Mills , but apart from that had a brill day :thumbup:
parked at Kiln Bank Cross and worked down to Hovel Knott and back
then up to Brown Pike and (later) back
so pretty happy with that section now
even found a nice line off White Pike and over to Caw which should come in handy on the Duddon race

I'm going to have Friday off work, go up to Broughton Mills and recce the first bit of this up to Brown Pike...and mess about on the Coniston fells til it goes dark

I've been looking at doing this as well Mick, haven't got round to it yet for one reason or another. Was wondering if was getting a bit late in the year but I still haven't given up on doing it before the nasty weather sets in .... what sort of time does your schedule have you starting?

It is just less than half an equivalent BG (35+ 12K feet -> 60 equivalent miles ) plays (65+ 27K -> 120 equivalent miles). For the most part it is good going under foot too, IMHO on average better and more runnable ground than a BG. So BG pace is maybe 11-12 hours.

There are just 12 hours of daylight at present, dropping to 9.5 by the end of october, so still doable for a couple of weeks at BG pace, perhaps finishing in gloom. The discussion makes me tempted to do it again.

Sunrise start is 6.15 at the mo , moving to 7.15 over the next month.

The only thing non obvious is advisable to "know" beforehand is the route to the first two tops, after that the rest of the route is on various race routes and paths. Nice route

Our schedule is 12 hour 38 mins, 6am start to make most of the light at this time of year.

Cheers Mick. If I do manage to squeeze it in, it will likely be early in November - even less light. I am contemplating a very early start to compensate. Let us know how you get on won't you? I am OK with the route ... will have to get that descent of Great End sorted beforehand though, not been off that way before.

At that pace I would quite like to join you!

You might be better off, starting in just light, then accepting that if you slow, the last few miles /cat bells are gloomy / dark. Hard to get it wrong from honister on, once you have found dale head tarn.

The shortest routes to the first top involve some relatively small trods in heather which are possibly hard to find in the dark, although there is always wainwright' route which goes just round the back before up.
