Garmin to MemoryMap for me, nothing finer (esp 25K scale).

Before I got Memory Map I just used to use Google Earth - doesn't give ascent but you can at least get distance.

Memory Map > Garmin 305 > SportTracks > Google Earth...but then I'm a computer Geek.

I use Fetcheveryone to record all my runs and and races.

I also sometimes use a freebie program on my PDA called TraceMe which will plot you but that's because I am a cheapskate and won't pay for expensive garmin kit
