defo not Hank Marvin thats for sure
This is an unanswerable question of course!
He's great but freely admits that his style is entirely based around him being unable to play quickly but being good at bending notes, which he of course utterly excels at, but he's hardly the best "all round" guitarist. He's plenty of people's favourite guitarist though.
My personal favourite is Steve Howe, but he's gone rather out of fashion.
Think 'worlds best' is a bit generic given the many different styles which will throw up names such as Hendrix or Gilmour. Mainstream icons will always be touted as 'the best' but there are so many talented guitarists that are not 'mainstream' or instantly known. For me Martin Simpson can make a track sound like there are 3 people playing the guitar when it is just him but being from a folk genre he is not well known although very succesful and long lived. From an even more distant genre (bluegrass), Doc Watson is a master of flatpicking and widely recognised as being a living legend having won 7 Grammys in his long career, unhindered by the fact he his blind.
Fair point well made, but in my eyes he is still the greatest guitarist ever. He is the only muscian that can regularly move me to tears when I see him play, absolutely inspirational.
However, if you want to see some amazing guitar playing, take a look at Dominic Frasca here - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=r2BOApUvFpw
I have no idea where the background rhythm is coming from - very very clever....

Good debate. What is the defintion of a great guitarist? Technical proficiency or the ability to emote a piece of music. Personally I prefer someone who has a unique style that moves me.
