I would have to agree, an unsupported attempt would be the purest form for me, yet in the same breath I have ultimate respect for anyone who has completed the BGR in under 24hrs regardless of how they completed it!

    Let me see now...

Bannister used two pacers (Brasher & Chataway) to run 1 mile

Hillary's expedition used sherpas, probably dozens

Amundsen used dogs (and then ate them but that is clearly for another thread)

So is your problem really to do with Fellrunner articles because it seems 'assisted achievements' ought to be OK according to your examples?

Want to race on the fells, do it, want to do short races, do it, want to do medium races, do it, want to do long races, do it. If your fast, run fast, if your a mid packer, finish in the middle, if your slow, come last. Just go out and do what you want/enjoy, it's better than sitting in a pub moaning about life and slagging everyone off, besides, you can do that when you've finished your run

BG supported in 24 hours, BG solo in however long, 3m Fell race (first ever) what's the difference, there all goals people set themselves, and good on anyone who sets a goal and reaches it

And if you fall short, get off your ass and try again

You could ask your local library to get it.
