    Sleeping bag weight

What weight would be considered 'acceptable' when you have to run with it as part of the equipment?

I know where you are coming from Ady. Crazy kit list!

Weight as a measure of a sleeping bag quality/warmth rating is stupid.

Cheaper bags have to put more filling in making them heavier than a top quality one per the same warmth.

The rules should state that a required standard is 'x' degrees COMFORT rating ,not to be confused with survival rating.

That way you can splash out on a top of the range goose down micro bag or carry a supermarket special which is 2 or 3 time the weight and 4 times the bulk But the choice is yours.
I have a 0 degrees rating bag that is 650grm and packs to the size of a bag of sugar.

For UK races I would consider anything under a kilo an acceptable weight as the temp never really gets below 0 much when races are on. But much of the weight issue depends on how well you sleep cold and if you are prepared to suffer.

I had a 900g synthetic bag that I used for the OMM fully clothed with space blankets and slept in a puddle for a couple of hours. I then got a 420g down top bag which is far warmer and can be compressed to fist sized dimension.

You need to think what temp it could be and what clothes you will have. If you have a down vest with you then you can get away with a lighter thinner bag. Biggest thing is warm feet usually mean a better sleep!

Whats the event and whats your budget?

Also very dependent on how warm / well fed / well hydrated you are, what you are sleeping on (bubble wrap, balloon bed, foam etc), and clothing. I must admit to being a big fan of the PHD Minimus which I'm very happy in down to below freezing on b/w or a b/b. It's under 500g IIRC. I usually wear a thin long sleeved merino top and boxers in it plus dry socks if I know it will be cold.

...you might want to look on the OMM forum for extensive threads on sleeping bags and kit weight - also check out the PHd (Phil Hutchinson Down) web site - there is plenty of information on how down weight is rated for temp and lofting etc. for their equipment.

A starting point is I guess when and for what am I using this bag?

Are you allowed to take a Blizzard Bag? Very light and compact, and ideal if it's for emergency use, i.e. you aren't expecting to use it. These are acceptable for the High Peak Marathon.

Emergency/bivvi bag is additional bit of kit!
Hopefully will have options of borrowing a superlight bag. I have a sub 1KG one but will use this aboard and don't want to invest in another to save 400g.
I seem to be spending a lot of money on kit just lately - I used to think cycling was pricey but when you need a couple of pairs of shoes every 3 months + a few bits of fancy kit, there ain't much difference (apart from the initial investement).

try competitive dingy sailing, my crew mate and i put £2000 a year in each to race my last boat, that didn't include the price of the boat to start with, just running costs so imagine what a 40ft-er costs Ady, when I buy a new pair of shoes my wife doesn't say a word
