    hoooooly hell

Did the boxhill race on saturday- didnt really train at all over Christmas, and figured it would be a good intro to getting back into it for 09.

I didnt realise quite how much pain I was going to be in by the end of it.

For a couple of years now Ive done 8 hour adventure races, and I have NEVER been so tired after a race ever.
Went home and just collapsed for hours. Slept amazingly well that night, still knackered on the sunday, and I still hurt today.

    Wow.
An entirely new degree of pain. That works.

oh- and I managed to come in the top half... Quite happy with that.

my question is, does it ever hurt any less?

Fell running in Surrey? Hey the North goes South!

As for pain, well in IMVHO there are two types, good and bad, bad is like badly sprained ankle, dentist etc.

Good pain is after a run and.....er.......perhaps Lola could expand upon this theme

Well done on completing the Box Hill race Zephyr! Short answer is - not if you're trying hard enough! Long answer is - your muscles will get used to the hills and so will your lungs, but please be reassured the race winner felt much like you and I, he just ran faster.

I did the Boxhill fell race too Zephr. Where are you based then? I thought it was a great value for money race, smashing route (I thought it was going to be harder - there was some flat wasn't there). There's the Meon Valley Plod on 1st March if you like hilly races.

I'd really like to try a hilly (can you call it a fell?) race down south. I can speak the lingo for a start and used to love running around the beech woods and hills of the Chilterns.

Yes, the Isle of Wight series.
I read about that in Feet in the Clouds and nearly fell off my chair.
Having grown up on the Wight, living there for 18 consecutive years of my life, Id never heard of it.
    crazy.

At least I still have a place there I can go and stay should I be about to race in Sept this year.

Leith Hill Lady- Im Based in South London, so not exactly prime fell running country, and although there were some flat bits in the course the other weekend, they were very welcome as it enabled me to get my breath back.
(got to say I was most disappointed with myself not being able to run 100% of the time)

Oh, one other thing- going up hill, I recognise the need for the hands on Quads approach, but the way most people were doing it- bent almost double- surely that decreases lung capacity massivly, which, in turn, has a knock on effect on aerobic performance?
    just a thought.
