It's a few years since I did this one. James McQueen organised it then, anyone know how he is now?
I saw him in September, he'd just finished doing hill efforts.
You're quite right, I was chuffed to bits seeing him.
I've just decided I don't trust you anymore.
Fellrunners can lay claim to an array of talents and today I witnessed another one....'Gurning'.
The finish line is situated at the foot of an old cart track that descends from the quarry. It's steep and hard underfoot, the type of descent that goes through every joint and your face can't hide the discomfort....love it.
From the school registration Moel Wnion can be seen off into the distance and it looks pretty tame from down here. The race start is approximately 5-10 minutes gentle jog away through the village and along a quiet backroad. It looks like a good turnout of probably 100 or so runners and the sun is also out to play....beltin.
The climb up Moel Wnion feels anything but tame and I'm laughing to myself for my earlier assumption. Once at the summit it's good downhill running followed by a short climb up to Gyrn. This is the only part of the race where any rock is properly encountered and once off the summit good running is experienced again. The final climb is Moel Faban after which follows a cracking descent that requires plenty of jumping, twisting and turning to avoid the prickly ground shrubs that lead down to the quarry....then the finish line can be seen...get ready to Gurn.
Thanks to all involved.
