Fast foot drills (like footy players do) , oh yes , and those lovely cycle spin classes in overpriced gyms led by waxy mary in her leotard !!

Or ... find a flat piece of grass and cycle on your MTB like the clappers in a lowish gear till you feel sick / rest / repeat . Then do 20 secs fast foot running / 20 secs recovery / keep repeating till your sick again .
Also do heavy dead lifts weekly and this apparantly will improve leg speed and stride length resulting in better overall efficiency .

Keith Anderson once told me the reason he had good leg speed on the flat was due to all the decent (overspeed training) he did on the fells.

Call me a fool but I'd tend to think it'd be the other way around

get on a good treadmill and steadily increase the speed, and then progressively increase as and when suits

makes your legs go cartoon fast ( no wind resistance etc to slow you down )

has worked wonders for my PB's at all distances and combines well with hill work outs which provide the power etc
