why do you think you are a 56cm Andy, have you been measured?? what's the budget? Are you bothered about 2nd hand? Is it for commuting or racing or general purpose? soooo many questions....but campag or shimano and standard or compact???

I think 56 cm because 54 feels a bit too small and 58 feels a bit too big, and the various places I've looked to get advice on size suggest something like 55 or 56.
Racing - no. Commuting - not any more

Did it with the team on Saturday on a borrowed road bike. The bike was just fine on the cycle route (if slightly too small), but horrible on the track in Ennerdale. I also found the back to front brakes a bit scary on the descent into CroasdaleIs it for a ride from Whitehaven Andy? (only jealous. As I said, I'm not big on bikes so don't understand why someone would want to put the front brake lever on the left.
I'm not looking for a bike for that route as the plan is not for me to do that leg, and if the plan changes during the race, I'll use one of the other team bikes.
I suppose the reason I want a road bike is that I've discovered how much easier they are to ride on the roads than a mountain bike, and now I have more time, I feel I should be getting about more on two wheels rather than four.

It's a minefield. Front brake on the left is an American thing.........
Borrow one of Darren's finest and then compare to somthing crap and go for somthing in between
there is a bike shop in skipton thats you actually hire the bikes before you buy.
i have a decent road bike but also have a hybrid.
its a marin with flat handlebars,road frame and wheels,mb gears,i used it for jura and it was spot on.
keep your options open.
p.s.does your work do 'ride to work scheme'?allows you to pay monthly and save a little brass in process.
has anyone seen the Boardman bikes.. available now in Halfords. Any views?
