Good effort Nick. Don't lose heart. As Alan says, you will return a wiser man.

    I enjoyed the photos too.

My clubmate Brian Melia did finish in 31 hours or so. He popped round yesterday to bring my Raid Light poles back which he said were a great help from Courmayeur onwards. He looked ok, but his feet were pretty trashed.

I really fancy the CCC in 2010 to see how that goes.

I've spent so much time in Cham over the years, it will feel like I'm running home.

I ran (walked) with Brian coming out of Courmayeur but then started to push going to Bertone. he seemed strong and really enjoying it.

I used the raid lights too, modifed to make sure they couldn't separate but were essentially unable to be taken down so I ran with them from Cham. On the climbs they were a huge help, helped to create a rythym. I only decided to take them at the last minute, but walking with poles carrying a pack for 4 days rpobably helped me to get used to using poles.

Definite advantage I reckon, if you can use them. On the descents I mainly just held them in one hand, they are so light this wasn't a problem. There were a few wind milling moments early on, trying to drink or eat, but you soon stop becoming too much of a menace to other runners.

    Iain

I used the self same pair in the Trail des Aiguilles Rouges last year. A mere 58 kms, but during the later stages, when the field was spread out, and because I was running solo by then, I found them a great help.

    When in Rome........

And I have just come across Krissy's picture gallery for the UTMB.

Images 124 onwards are not taken on the day, but are great pictures nonetheless.

Also interesting to read her observations about her gear for the race
