    water on helvellyn ridge...

does anyone know of any handy springs not too far off the main ridge path?

i'm planning on having a run from dunmail along the ridge and back next week and dont really want to be too encumbered with litres of water from the off

I think you'll probably find something around stake pass just after Raise.

There is a great spring about 400 yards SW of Helvellyn summit. It is the "Brownrigg Well", which is the source of Whelpside gill. The water is fantastic quality.

If Coniston's anything to go by, there's been water exactly where you want it for the last 6 weeks. Just tilt your head back and open your mouth.

    Here's the location: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...5185&A=Y&Z=115

What on earth was there a leat up there for?

Worth knowing about for BG attempts - I'll add it to the site tonight. It's about 40metres down from the ridge so a bit of a drop.

I assume to ensure a water supply for the mine further down?

It must flow pretty strongly to tap into it so high up.

According to an Old Cumbrian Gazetteer:
On the western side of the mountain [Helvellyn], about the distance of three hundred yards from its summit, and three hundred perpendicular feet below it, there is a spring called Brownrigg Well, where the water issues in all seasons in a copious stream; its temperature in the summer months being generally from 40° to 42°: and when mixed with a little brandy, as recommended by 'mine host' of the Nag's Head, it makes a grateful beverage
